BRUP project facilitated formation of Disaster Management Committee (DMC) in Gazipur City Corporation and in all 57 wards of Gazipur

As far I know, no other city corporation in the whole country has Disaster Management Committee (DMC) in all the wards. I highly acknowledge the support from CARE and VERC who facilitated formation of DMC at the city corporation level with more than 100 members and took it beyond to the ward level through their BRUP project. Today we have DMCs in all our 57 wards in Gazipur- said K.M. Rahatul Islam Chief Executive Officer, Gazipur City Corporation.

BRUP project facilitated formation of Disaster Management Committee (DMC) in Gazipur City Corporation and in all 57 wards of Gazipur. On the second meeting of this half-yearly meeting of Gazipur City Corporation DMC, on 27 August 2017, at the Hall Room of Gazipur City Corporation, success of BRUP and activities under DMC was discussed. Prof. Mannan, Mayor of Gazipur City Corporation chaired the meeting.

Previously Gazipur City Corporation had organized a two day workshop in collaboration with BRUP project on Disaster Management for all 57 Ward secretary and the member secretaries of Ward Disaster Management Committee. After facilitating DMC in the City Corporation level, a new model of such a committee for collective action during disaster was piloted in 2 wards in Gazipur. Later the model was implemented to all 57 wards.

Senior Technical Manager-Resilience of CARE Bangladesh shared BRUP learnings. He emphasized the plan of disaster and climate change risk reduction and how the community led to develop and implement their risk reduction action plan.

After the presentation a Question and Answer (Q&A) session was conducted by Mayor of City Corporation. He asked the respective councilors of the ward no.12 & 55 how the communities working and what are the impacts of these activities. Female ward councilor of 12 ward said that the communities are now united and they have experienced to implement some activities especially she mentioned the street solar light that reduce the suffering of women workers at night and pipeline water supply systems. Mr. Selim Councilors of 55 ward mentioned the activities of CDC and highly appreciated the Urban Community Volunteer activities with mentioning the workshop on exploring the cause of fire incident at Tongi. STM-R said BRUP has a plan to organize fair on fire license. CEO, Gazipur City Corporation concluded the meeting.
