Cash distributed among the fire affected people of South Tetultola, Tongi

A total 33 fire affected households in South Tetultola, Tongi has received unconditional cash grant on the 9th February 2016 from BRUP project that being implemented by CARE & VERC. Each family was provided with Tk. 3000/- to meet their emergency and basic needs.

On 6th February around at 2 am there was a devastating fire outbreak in South Tetultola slum in Millgate area of Tongi, Gazipur. Some 58 slum houses of the slum were gutted into ashes following the devastating fire that continued till midday of 07 February 2016.

After the fire the affected people took shelter under the open sky and were passing their days with almost no food, shelter and water. However, there was a remarkable initiative from locals, they served kichuri for two days by collecting money from community members.

CARE’s support reached to the people within 72 hours of the fire incident. According to locals this immediate cash support from CARE would be very helpful to recover from the sudden shock and also encourage other GO-NGOs to support.

During the cash distribution, local elected Councilor of ward 55 Mr. Selim Hosain, CARE Bangladesh Program Coordinator-Emergency and Climate Change Ms. Jesmin B. Hossain, Team Leader of Building Resilience of the Urban Poor (BRUP) project Palash Mondal, President of South Tetultola Md. Ibrahim and some other local elites were present.

Created from a factory the blaze destroyed a total 58 thatched houses including small yarn (tula) godowns, clothes, furniture and utensils of the inhabitants. Being informed, six units of fire fighters units from Tongi and Joydevpur stations rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after six efforts in cooperation with the locals.
