“Bottom up plan may be effective for successful implementation of multi-sectoral approach to nutrition”

Government of Bangladesh has implemented the Second National Nutrition Action Plan for 2016-2025 according to National Nutrition Policy 2015. For implementing the National Nutrition plan district and sub-district nutrition committee has been established officially in the year 2018. Formulation of annual nutrition plan is one of the main responsibilities of district and sub-district nutrition committee. To formulate a real, achievable as well as demand driven nutrition plan for UNCC (Union Nutrition Coordination Committee) two workshops had been held in Rajanagar Union of Derai Upazila and Derai Upazila last month. On that sequence, formulation of annual nutrition plan is going in every upazila of Sunamganj District by pre planned time schedule.

On 22 June, 2019, Saturday, upazila level workshop was held in Upazila Parisad Complex of Jagannathpur which was chaired by Md. Mahfujul Anam Masum, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Jagannathpur. All Union Parishad headed by respective Chairman of Jagannathpur Upazila participated in the workshop to formulate an annual nutrition plan for Jagannathpur Upazila.

The following day a discussion meeting was held on formulation of annual district nutrition plan of Sunamganj, which was held in the Circuit House, Sunamganj on  Sunday, 23 June, 2019. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Abdul Ahad, honorable District commissioner of Sunamganj District, who is also the president of District Nutrition Coordination Committee - DNNC. Welcome speech was delivered by the DC and Dr. Md. Shah Nawaz, Director General of Bangladesh National Nutrition Council, was the Chief guest of these two events. It was a two days “Learning visit by BNNC on how the sub national level planning workshop has conducted” combined of ten member, headed by Dr. Md. Shah Nawaz, Director General of Bangladesh National Nutrition Council

Formulation of Upazila annual nutrition planning was a combined effort of UNO and “Collective Impact for Nutrition project (CI4N) of CARE Bangladesh”.  Eight draft Nutrition Plans were prepared for eight union which has been combined in one plan for the Jagannathpur upazila through the collective active involvement as well as with due sincere efforts of all in the workshop , and the concerned Union Parishad chairmen seek help from Upazila Nirbahi Officer to implement the plan and hoped for all cooperation.

Md. Mahfujul Anam Masum, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Jagannathpur, gave directions for further implementation based on the information taken in his affirmation. He seemed very promising about implementing the nutrition plan has been taken for his Upazila. He said, “It is unnecessary to build a road with golden if there is no one to walk that road due to nutrition deficiency.” Further he emphasized on social behavior change communication activities and counselling for adolescence girls. On this context Md. Mahfujul Anam Masum said to upazila livestock officer, “You can motivated girls to poultry farming so that they can get fresh eggs to eat”.

After the workshop Chief guest Dr. Md. Shah Nawaz, Director General of Bangladesh National Nutrition Council handed over the Operational Guideline of District and Upazila Nutrition Coordination Committee that has been developed by BNNC by technical support of CARE Bangladesh to Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Jagannathpur.

Senior Technical Coordinator- Advocacy and Capacity Building, CARE Bangladesh, M Hafijul Islam hosted workshop who also works for Collective Impact for nutrition, one of the project of CARE Bangladesh. Therefore, Team leader of Collective Impact for Nutrition Project Nazneen Rahman, District Technical Manager Md. Hassnuzzaman, Upazila Technical Officer Sree Arup Ratan Das, Md. Nazmul Hasan and Development Trainee Jannatun Nayem who are working for CARE Bangladesh had also participated in the workshop.

District Nutrition Coordination Committee organize the ‘Annual Nutrition Planning Workshop 2019-20’ the following day. This workshop was chaired by Mr. Abdul Ahad, honorable District commissioner of Sunamganj District. Dr. Akhter Imam, Dr. SM Hasan Mahmud, Dr. Fazla Rabbi, Assistant Director of BNNC, Dr. AFM Iqbal Kabir, National Consultant, BNNC Dr. Delwar Hossain, Md. Nizam Uddin Biswas, Jakaria Coudhury, Consultant of Nutrition International, Dr. Farhana Sharmin, Nutrition Specialist of World Health Organization were spontaneously participated in this two days “Learning Visit” of Sunamganj.
