Workshop on Sustainable Service Delivery Strategy at Gazipur City Corporation

A workshop has been arranged engaging all stakeholders and service providers active in Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) on 15 June 2016 from 10.00 am to 1.00opm at GCC auditorium. Mr. A.K.M Rahatul Islam, honorable Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GCC, chaired the workshop. The workshop invites fruitful conversation on current status of poor and low income communities in Gazipur, strategy to deliver sustainable services and way forward. The main objective of this workshop was coordination and combination of all existing service providers in this region to ensure quality services to targeted community, develop a participatory action plan and build consensus which will make the existing services more improved, available, affordable and pro-poor friendly. Md. Aslam Hossain, honorable Secretary of GCC; Dr. Md. Ali Haydar Khan, Civil Surgeon, Gazipur District was also presented at the workshop.
It’s worth mentioning, that CARE Bangladesh is implementing 8 projects in GCC where 1 is on building resilience of the urban poor, 5 on workforce empowerment, 3 on welfare of garments worker, mother and children health and nutrition. For executing these activities CARE Bangladesh is working in line with City Corporation, Department of Women Welfare, Department of Social Services, Family Welfare Center, Nagor shastho kendra, Smiling Sun, BRAC, BLAST, Marie Stopes, BAPSA, Ain o Salish Kendra, UCEP, Dhaka Ahsania Mission and other Govt. and Non-Govt. organizations. Currently CARE Bangladesh is working in 13 wards of GCC where 1,39,256 households are being benefited directly and indirectly.
To reduce disaster risk in urban context CARE Bangladesh is developing community based organization, Risk Reduction Action Plan, providing additional livelihood support to most vulnerable women through engaging women and local community, involving their knowledge and skill and bringing positive change in children’s attitude and behavioral level. Additionally, to execute Risk Reduction Action Plan CARE is assisting City Corporation and already established garbage management system in 6 communities. Submersible pump for pure drinking water and solar light for safe movement of women and children in evening are in progress. In conjunction, CARE also strengthening the capacity of targeted institutions to plan for and provide services that mitigate the impact of manmade and natural disasters.
CARE intends to deliver service at poor peoples’ door step by effective linkage building within health, sanitation, education, economic inclusion, women affairs and legal assistance by this workshop. At the end of the discussion session, there was a group work to seek ways forward to provide sustainable services and establish effective linkage, presentation of group work and everyone’s consent to develop a joint action plan. By the suggestion and consent of the Chairperson, a committee of seven members formed putting CARE and GCC at the center.
