The ILO Convention: Opportunity for Change
 June 26, 2019

Everyone, everywhere has the right to work free from violence and harassment. Abuse isn’t in anybody’s job description, yet millions and millions of women around the world experience sexual harassment at work. This year, we have an opportunity to change that. In June, governments, employers and trade unions that make up the International Labour Organization (ILO) will meet to agree a landmark treaty, or convention, to end violence and harassment in the world of work. The next few months are crucial if we’re to secure a strong agreement that protects women and men wherever they work.

Briefing Paper on Ending Violence and Harassment in the world of work
 May 28, 2018

Ending violence and harassment in the world of work’, with a strong focus on the gender dimension of violence and the inclusion of the informal sector in the world of work. CARE considers the Convention and Recommendation essential to signal without ambiguity that violence and harassment in the world of work is the antithesis of decent work and demands serious and urgent attention. The approach to dealing with violence and harassment in the world of work at both international and domestic level is often fragmented and limited in scope. The development of international standard(s) would fill important gaps at international and domestic levels by taking a comprehensive and integrated approach in addressing all forms of violence and harassment across all occupations and sectors.

Gender Amongst Rohingya Refugees and Host Communities
 October 21, 2020

There is a tension between mainstreaming gender and providing lifesaving assistance. Gender mainstreaming is not seen as lifesaving assistance. The link between gender equality and ensuring access to services is not well understood. The fact, for example, that if we could have ensured gender mainstreaming right from the onset by looking at the different needs of women, men, boys and girls, many protection issues, including SGBV, could have been mitigated. The point is that without mainstreaming and integrating gender issues you only achieve 50% of the target (Key Informant, Gender Hub, ISCG).

Women: A Driving Force for Urban Resilience
 November 05, 2018

A photo- documentation of comprehensive disaster risk reduction approach towards urban resilience 2017. This photo book is mainly an output of CARE Bangladesh’s ‘Building Resilience of the Urban Poor’ (BRUP) project funded by C&A Foundation. The project aimed to increase resilience of urban low income populations putting women in the driving seat, promoting women leadership and strengthening institutional capacity to disaster risk reduction. The women living in Gazipur slums are considered as the most resilient people because of its poor infrastructure and unhealthy living condition. In 2015 CARE Bangladesh’s BRUP initiative started to work on resilience building with 2000 women and children of them. BRUP overturned the concept of women seen as the victims of disasters. It worked to turn it around and helped them prove that they were the driving force of resilience.

Building Strong Foundations - Good Local Governance Models for Nutrition in Bangladesh
 January 14, 2024

Malnutrition remains a persistent challenge in Bangladesh, particularly among women and children. 28% of children under five are stunted1 and 37% of women of reproductive age are anaemic.2 Institutional challenges have impeded the effective implementation of nutrition programs, such as a lack of staff, inadequate budgets, and limited coordination and collaborative planning for nutrition programs across sectors. To improve nutrition status, CARE and consortium members Plan International UK and the Eco-Social Development Organisation (ESDO) are implementing the Joint Action for Nutrition Outcome (JANO) project, which is funded by the European Union with co-funding from the Austrian Development Cooperation.

Building Trust and Accountability in Nutrition Governance - Community Scorecard
 January 14, 2024

Although years of programming efforts aimed at improving nutrition in Bangladesh have shown progress, malnutrition rates remain persistently high in the country, particularly among women and children. 28% of children under five in Bangladesh remain stunted,1 while 37% of women of reproductive age are anemic.2 Institutional challenges, such as limited staff and inadequate budgets for nutrition, have impeded the effective implementation of nutrition programs. At the sub-national level, lack of understanding among local government about national plans and policies related to nutrition hinder marginalized groups’ access to nutrition services. Within the nutrition sector, the government of Bangladesh (GoB) has no policy of social audit or community oversight mechanisms, which are important for understanding community satisfaction with services and promoting community engagement and government responsiveness.

As women throughout Bangladesh strive to fit into the patriarchal framework of the society, they are left with little voice or a position that garners respect. They have very limited opportunities to speak up their rights and have feeble control over their own life. The underprivileged parts of Northern Bangladesh are no exception and gender discrimination here is common. A society that gives little value to the role of women, dreams and aspirations are often lost in the everyday turmoil of rearing children and doing household chores.

Smallholders’ Access To Finance Through Bank
 August 07, 2017

About 80% of the rural people in Bangladesh, especially smallholder farmers (owning land <= 1.0 hectare), are not participants of the formal banking channels which explains their significant reliance on Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs)/NGOs for traditional loans. In 2014, 693 licensed MFIs in Bangladesh disbursed USD 8.4 billion to their 34 million active borrowers1. However the effectiveness of microfinance has come under serious controversy because rather than benefitting the penurious rural farmers, it is trapping them into vicious cycle of debt which arise from extremely high interest payments and stringent repayment time.

Can dairy value chain projects change gender norms in rural Bangladesh? Impacts on assets, gender norms, and time use
 December 26, 2013

The goal of CARE-Bangladesh's Strengthening the Dairy Value Chain Project (SDVCP) is to improve the dairy-related incomes of 35,000 households in northwest Bangladesh. To achieve its goal, SDVCP addresses the major challenges to improving smallholder participation in the value chain, namely farmer mobilization and education, access to markets for their milk, and access to productivity-enhancing inputs. The project assists in the formation of dairy farmer groups as well as increasing women's participation in the dairy value chain, particularly in such nontraditional occupations as milk collectors and livestock health workers. The SDVCP evaluation looks at how both tangible and intangible assets may have changed, particularly for women, as an outcome of the intervention. Asia Impact Report 2005-2010
 May 13, 2013

This report is an analytical review of CARE's programs and projects undertaken with partners and allies in 16 countries over the period 2005-2010. In publishing this review of our work in Asia over a five-year period, CARE seeks to provide greater accountability to those with whom we work and to those who entrust CARE with resources, as well as contribute to global discussion on assessing the impact of development efforts. We aim to improve our knowledge and evidence base to make our future programming, partnerships and advocacy more effective, and to identify where we should improve our internal systems. CARE regularly reviews the effectiveness of its programs as part of its commitment to learning and accountability. Like all agencies working in development, CARE needs to learn from the challenges we face and our possible failings. This report does not set out to present the totality of CARE's work in Asia, or to synthesise all lessons captured in program evaluations, both positive and negative. Rather, the purpose is to better understand the impact of CARE's work in the region over the past five years, as a basis upon which to build in the future.
