CARE Bangladesh and HSBC Bangladesh have partnered to implement “Developing Sunflower value chain for sustainable farm household income at the Southwest coastal region of Bangladesh” – a high value crop with potential as a mean to increase crop intensity as well as adapting to changing climate. The project aims to build the resilience of smallholder farmers by promoting the production and value chain development of sunflower, and through women-led adaptive kitchen garden practices. It builds on three-pronged approaches, i.e., adaptive agricultural practices, market-driven strategies, and smart agri-mechanization. The project aims to directly benefit 1,975 households, with 1,225 households participating in sunflower production and value chain development activities in Satkhira. The project will strengthen the sunflower value chain by ensuring farmers’ training, post-harvest mechanization, improved green storage facilities, and enhanced market linkages. The two-year project will strengthen agricultural adaptation of smallholder farmers and women against climate change induced salinity stresses in Satkhira district of Bangladesh.

Abdul Malek, a mango farmer from Tarulia village in Satkhira, struggled with declining returns as salinity and lack of irrigation left his orchard fallow for over a decade. Through CARE Bangladesh’s HSBC-funded SURJAMONI project, he received training and technical support to introduce sunflower cultivation on 33 decimals of unused land. This yielded 230 kg of sunflower seeds, earning him 16,100 BDT in one season. “I never imagined sunflowers could grow here,” he shared with pride. Malek now plans to continue sunflower farming, demonstrating how SURJAMONI is helping farmers revive unproductive lands, diversify income, and build resilience in coastal areas.
